Liposonix FAQ

Liposonix Overview | FAQ

Who is an ideal candidate for this procedure?

An ideal candidate for this procedure is someone aged 40-70 years old who wants to permanently restore youthful facial contour.

How is the Rejuveface™ performed?

Dr. Shu performs the Rejuveface™ under a local anesthetic and light sedation. He will do the Vaser Hi Def Liposcupturing procedure to contour face first, and then do standard liposuction in the donor site (usually abdomen, buttock and thigh). Finally he performs the micro-injection with structural fat grafting technique. Small amounts (less than 0.1 cc at a time) of fat are carefully microinjected in a series of discrete layers to gradually build new soft tissue structure and facial contour.

How long does the procedure usually take?

The 1st part of the procedure, Vaser Hi Def process may take 1 hours. The 2nd part of the procedure, the micro-injection with structural fat grafting process can typically be performed in under 2 hours.

Will the procedure be painful?

There is typically minimal discomfort and pain for the procedures.

What is the recovery process like?

There will be some swelling, bruising on face, as well as some soreness. Take the pain medications as needed. It typically takes about two weeks for the swelling and bruising to resolve, although it depends on each individual.

When the fat is taken from donor sites such as abdomen or buttocks will the skin from the donor sites tighten up or become saggy?

The skin from the donor sites typically tightens up.

How does Vaser Hi Def liposculpture work?

Vaser Hi Def Liposculpture uses deep, superficial, and transitioning techniques in specific areas of the torso to create a more natural muscular appearance. Intramuscular fat transfer into the areas of the torso that need more volume have helped patients achieve their goals for a more athletic looking appearance.

What is the difference between Vaser Liposelection and Hi Def Lipo?

Hi Def Liposculpture defines athletic muscular structures in a normal and fit body, whereas liposelection targets pockets of resistant fat in order to create a more pleasing body. The Hi Def procedure is intended for those who are already physically fit and active who want to enhance their athletic form. Liposelection simply removes fat that refuses to go away despite continued diet and exercise.

Who is an ideal candidate for Vaser Hi Def Liposculpture?

This procedure is meant for body sculpting rather than fat removal. Therefore, men and women who are fit and active with good muscle tone and skin quality are ideal candidates for Hi Def Liposculpture. The typical patient maintains a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise but is still unable to achieve the desired athletic appearance.

What areas of the body can be treated with Vaser Hi Def Liposculpture?

Multiple areas of the body can be treated with this procedure, including the abdomen, chest, back, waist, arms, thighs, buttocks, and hips. Men typically request for six-pack abs and a defined chest and waist. Women typically request for more defined abs, waist, hips, and buttocks.

What should I expect after my treatment?

After your treatment, you should be able to resume normal activities within a few days. Most patients report mild to moderate pain and swelling, although some patients may experience more pain or bruising than others. Results can be seen right after the procedure and become more evident about two weeks later when the swelling has reduced. Patients are advised not to resume regular exercising until a month after the procedure. Final results are typically seen after four to six months.

What is the difference between the Vaser procedure and laser liposuction?

Vaser procedures use ultrasound energy to liquify and remove fat cells, while laser liposuction uses a laser to heat and dissolve the fat. In addition, the Vaser procedure generates heat under the skin to cause the overlying collagen to contract and the skin to tighten. Vaser also differs from laser liposuction in that it is able to distinguish between fat cells and other body tissue (nerves, muscle, blood cells, etc), therefore decreasing the chance of tissue damage. Because laser liposuction is not tissue selective, there could be possible damage done to surrounding tissue.

What is VASER lipo system? How is it different from traditional liposuction?

Vaser Lipo, also known as LipoSelection®, is an advanced body contouring procedure that selectively removes unwanted body fat. An alternative to traditional liposuction, Vaser Lipo uses ultrasound technology to reshape your body without harming body tissue in the process. To accomplish this, the Vaser technique distinguishes between targeted body fat from important nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that could otherwise be harmed when removing fat. This technology additionally breaks up and liquifies fat while still preserving other important body tissue, resulting in smoother and faster results.

How does Vaser Lipo work?

First, the area to be reshaped is filled with a solution that shrinks the blood vessels in order to minimize potential blood loss and reduce bruising. The solution also makes it easier to break up the fatty tissue. A small probe then transmits ultrasound energy, which breaks up and liquifies the fat without harming other important tissues. Lastly, the liquified fat is removed through a suction process.

What body areas can be treated with Vaser Lipo?

Many areas of the body can be reshaped using the Vaser system, including the chin, neck, stomach, chest, back, arms, thighs, knees, buttocks, and hips. Just about any part of the body can be treated with this procedure.

How much fat can be removed?

There are limits to how much fatty tissue can be safely taken from the body. A good way to estimate how much fat can be removed from your body is to bend over toward the ground. The amount of loose fat that you see is about the amount that can be removed. This procedure should not be used as a weight loss solution, as there most likely will not be very much weight loss. The result of the procedure will give you a slimmer body shape that you are pleased with.

Where is Vaser Lipo performed?

Vaser Lipo is typically performed in a doctors’ office or surgery center. It can be performed under local anesthesia so that the patient is awake, general anesthesia, or IV sedation, depending on what you and your doctor decide on.

How soon will I see my results?

This depends on the amount of fat removed and the number of sites treated. You can typically see results right after the procedure is completed, with final results appearing in three to six months.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery time varies with the extensiveness of the procedure (amount of fat removed, the number of sites treated, etc). Patients typically return to normal activity within a few days after the procedure.

What about future weight gain or fat migration to other areas of the body?

If you gain or lose weight after the procedure, the weight usually gets distributed evenly through your entire body. Fat that is removed should not return or migrate to other parts of the body, assuming a healthy diet and lifestyle continues. However, there will always be layers of unremoved fat in your body, so these layers can expand if significant weight gain occurs.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Vaser Lipo?

Vaser is a solution for healthy people who are frustrated by the persistance of fat in certain areas of their body despite diet and exercise attempts. This technique is a quick procedure to get rid of stubborn fat areas. Although there are limits to the amount of fat that can be removed, your doctor can assist you with your decision about potential areas for sculpting, anticipated results, and the recovery process.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a skin condition caused by enlarged fat cells trapped in an inflexible network of collagen. The fat cells then become herniated which causes the dimpling effect.

The cause of Cellulite is multifactorial. Aging, hormones, genetics and dramatic weight changes can all play a role in the development of cellulite. These factors can cause connective tissue bands that pull skin down to create dimpling, and the fat cells they surround to become larger and push up into the skin, creating the “cottage cheese” effect.

What are the Treatment Options of Cellulite?

It depends on the severity of cellulite. SmoothShapes treatment is the best option for mild cellulite. Minimal invasive CellulyzeTM is the most effective way to treat the more advanced cellulite.

Is there any discomfort or pain with these treatments?

There should not be a discomfort with SmoothShape treatment. It is very comfortable and relaxing. Your technician will ask you about your comfort and adjust the vacuum pressure as needed.

The discomfort or pain related to CellulyzeTM is very similar to liposuction. You’ll have mild discomfort or pain, bruising, swelling afterwards.

How many treatments does it take?

A SmoothShapes treatment consists of 8 sessions, twice a week for four weeks. CellulyzeTM needs a treatment only.

After the initial treatments, is there any maintenance that needs to be done?

After the initial treatments, is there any maintenance that needs to be done?
Yes. Annual maintenance with SmoothShape is recommended to maintain your results.

Are the results proven with clinical studies?

Yes. 80% of clinical study on SmoothShape participants experience “a positive change in the smoothness of the treated areas.” and 70% experienced “a positive change in the tightness of the skin in the treated areas.” 81% experienced “significant volumetric reduction in subcutaneous fat.”

We don’t have the data of clinic studies on CellulyzeTM although it has been clinically proved to be very effective in treating more advanced cellulite.

Everyone offers cellulite treatment, how is CellulyzeTM different from the other cellulite treatments out there?

CellulyzeTM attacks the structure of celllulite. Most anti-cellulite treatments focus on cellulite superficially and may help to improve very mild cellulite by tightening skin, but CellulyzeTM can treat more advanced cellulite by releasing the fibrous bands beneath the skin and tightening skin surrounding cellulite. This can all be achieved in just one treatment.

What is laser lipo?

Laser lipo is a fast and safe fat-removing procedure that uses a laser to melt and remove unwanted fat cells in targeted body zones. In addition, the thermal effect from the laser causes the skin to contract, resulting in firmer, smoother skin that further enhances your body shaping goals. Laser lipo is an enhanced version of traditional liposuction and can be used as an alternative procedure to the traditional procedure.

How does laser liposuction work?

A mild numbing agent is first applied to the targeted fat area. A small metal tube called a cannula is then inserted under the skin. A tiny laser beam is fired, and the cannula is moved back and forth. The laser warms the targeted fat cells, creating a thermal effect. The targeted fat cells begin to melt and liquify since fat cells are highly receptive to thermal energy. Once the fat cells liquify, your doctor will suction them out of your body.

How is laser liposuction different from traditional liposuction?

Laser lipo and liposuction are both highly effective procedures for the removal of unwanted fat. However, traditional liposuction is extremely aggressive and could cause significant bruising, whereas laser lipo is much less harmful and reduces the risk of tissue damage. Traditional liposuction also requires anesthesia and pain medication to control pain, whereas laser lipo does not require the patient to be heavily sedated or experience much discomfort. Laser lipo is also less risky with fewer complications compared to traditional liposuction. Recovery time for laser lipo is shorter since the procedure is much less invasive.

What body zones can be treated with laser lipo?

Many areas of the body can be treated using this procedure, including the stomach, waist, chest, back, face, chin, neck, arms, thighs, buttocks, and ankles.

Is laser lipo safe?

Yes, laser lipo has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States. Many people have successfully undergone laser lipo treatment.

What are the benefits of laser lipo?

Laser lipo is ideal for removing localized areas of fat in stubborn body zones that are resistant to exercise and diet. This procedure allows your doctor to selectively target unwanted fat deposits and liquify and remove them. You’ll see an overall circumference reduction in the targeted zone, as well as skin tightening in the treated area.

How soon will I see results, and how long will theylast?

Results are typically dramatic and appear within 1 to 2 weeks after the treatment. However, certain areas such as the neck and jaw show ever faster results after only a few days. Because healing and metabolism rates differ with every patient, results usually require 3 to 4 months to fully appear. Improvement in the body shape continues to be seen for several months afterward.

Is Laser lipo a “one-time” treatment?

Laser lipo is typically done as a one-time treatment. Fat cells cannot grow back once they have been removed. However, significant weight gain will still appear after fat cells build up in areas where fat layers have not been removed. Additional treatments may be done if the final results are unsatisfactory.

Is there a recovery period?

Patients typically resume normal activities the day after the treatment. However, for more strenuous activities such as running and exercising, patients are advised to wait several days after the treatment.

Who is NOT a good candidate for laser lipo?

Women who are pregnant should not undergo laser lipo. Addionally, you will discuss the potASER® – ential health risks of the procedure at a consultation with your doctor.

Who is the ideal candidate for NaturalBreast™, breast augmentation?

Anyone who wants to achieve a natural looking, permanent increase in breast size should consider NaturalBreast™, breast augmentation. This procedure is ideal for women with moderate sized breasts who may have lost breast volume due to pregnancy or age. Younger women who only want a moderate enlargement, but who wish to avoid the use of breast implants, are also ideal candidates for this procedure. Natural breast augmentation is not fit for extremely slim women who want to achieve fairly large breast sizes, and it is ideal for patients who want to increase their breast sizes by more than 2 cups, in which case breast implants would be more suitable.

Is AquaShape permanent?

Fat cells removed with Body Jet do not grow back. Typically, any future weight gain is distributed throughout the body.

How is NateualFill™ breast augmentation performed?

Natural breast augmentation is generally performed as an outpatient treatment. First, unwanted body fat is first removed from areas such as the abdomen, thighs and buttocks using gentile Body-jet or Vaser liposuction. Then, the harvested fat cells are cleaned and concentrated with LipoCollector™ 3 technology and injected into the breast, where it replaces tissue volume. The concentrated fat graft creates the result with a natural looking, permanent breast augmentation.

Is AquaShape right for me?

The ideal candidate for AquaShape is in pretty good health. Patients with localized, exercise resistant fatty areas will obtain the best results. AquaShape could be right for you if you are looking to shed fat with a more minimally invasive procedure than traditional liposuction.

Does the natural breast augmentation procedure use general anesthesia?

No, the entire procedure which includes liposuction and the actual breast augmentation are performed under local anesthesia and twilight sleep (intravenous sedation).

How long does the procedure take?

Natural breast augmentation takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete. After finishing the procedure, the patient should be able to return home.

What are the results of this procedure?

Patients can usually increase their breast size by 1 cup sizes after undergoing natural breast augmentation, as well as enhance the fullness of their breasts. The puncture sites created for the fat injection portion of the procedure will eventually heal without leaving scars. Some patients may need to return for additional follow-up treatments.

Will the harvested fat survive after the procedure is finished?

Yes, most of the fat injected into the breast will be retained. In comparison, breast implants usually need to be replaced every 10 years and can often cause problems like ruptures and scarring.

Will the procedure cause future complications with mammograms and tumor formation?

Newer digital mammograms should not have any problems examining breasts that have undergone a natural augmentation procedure. In comparison, breast implants can block much of the breast from the view of mammograms. In terms of tumors, experienced radiologists are now capable of distinguishing tumors from the harmless calcifications that may develop with stem cell breast augmentation in x-ray images. It is important that you tell all doctors treating you that you underwent the augmentation procedure.

Is a hospital stay necessary after the procedure?

No, patients should be able to leave the office immediately after the natural breast augmentation procedure. The patient is fully mobile after the procedure since general anesthesia was not used during the procedure.

Can this natural breast augmentation method replace silicone implants?

In many cases, patients who want to remove their implants and go with the natural augmentation procedure can do so. Alternately, silicone implants can be left in place, and a more natural looking supplemental augmentation or rounding can be achieved using stem cell assisted fat transfer.

Can the fat transfer procedure also be used to make breasts firmer?

Natural breast augmentation with fat grafting is generally best suited for restoring volume in the breast, not firmness. If the breast firmness is our main concern, you may consider Vaser assisted RejuveBreast™ , a scarless breast lift offered by Dr. Shu.

What is the Liposonix treatment?

The Liposonix treatment uses non-invasive, high-intensity focused ultrasound to get rid of fat around your waistline (abdomen and love handles) without surgery. Results are typically seen in 8 to 12 weeks.

How does the Liposonix treatment work?

High-intensity ultrasound energy is focused on the targeted fat. Skin is not damaged as targeted fat beneath the skin is permanently destroyed by the ultrasound energy. The body naturally removes the destroyed fat from the treatment area, which may leave you with a thinner, more contoured waistline.

How is the Liposonix treatment different from other fat reduction products/procedures?

Unlike some other fat reduction procedures that often require multiple treatments to see results, with the Liposonix treatment, you can reduce your waistline by an average of 1 inch (2.5 cm), or about one dress or pant size, with a single one-hour treatment. Office visit time and individual results may vary. Results are typically seen in 8 to 12 weeks.

How long does a treatment take?

Usually a Liposonix treatment of the abdomen and love handles is completed in approximately one hour. Office visit time may vary. Your healthcare professional can give you a better estimate after evaluating you.

How will my doctor know if the Liposonix treatment is right for me?

Your doctor will decide if the Liposonix treatment is right for you based on an evaluation of a number of factors, including the amount of fat in the area to be treated and your overall health.

What happens to the fat after Liposonix?

The disrupted fat cells attract the body’s inflammatory and healing responses. Special cells called macrophages engulf the fat and cellular debris. The macrophages then transport the fat through the lymphatic and venous system eventually to the liver. This process takes 2-4 weeks, so there are no changes in fat, triglyceride or any other body chemistries. The liver treats the fat from the macrophages just like fat you have eaten. The liver takes the fat and metabolizes it normally. Studies have not shown an increase in other body measurements after the use of Liposonix. This means there is no measurable redistribution of the fat. We know it can’t go back to the treatment area because those cells no longer exist.

Who is a good candidate for Liposonix?

Both women and men can be candidates. You should be able to pinch at least an inch of fat in your area of concern. A layer of fat less than an inch probably does not require treatment. You should also be fairly close to your ideal body weight. Persons with Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 30 may be candidates. If your BMI is greater than 30, you will probably do better with traditional liposuction rather than Liposonix. Currently Liposonix has been approved for use on the abdomen and love handles. Some patients may be appropriate for other body areas.

What kind of results can I expect from Liposonix?

Liposonix permanently disrupts the fat cells in the treatment area. One treatment is recommended in the area. A treatment takes about an hour. The current studies showed an average decrease in waist size of 2.5cm or 1 inch after 3 months. This is essentially one pant size.

What are the side effects of Liposonix?

Liposonix has mild side effects. The majority of patients experience mild discomfort. Since each person has a different pain tolerance, medications are available for pain control. Some patients have some redness, swelling and bruising after Liposonix. Redness usually resolves after a few hours. The swelling from Liposonix usually resolves in a few days. Bruising from Liposonix may take up to 2 weeks to resolve. Arnica supplements taken for 3 days prior to Liposonix treatments and continued for 2 days after Liposonix may help reduce the bruising and swelling.

Will Liposonix help me lose weight?

Liposonix is NOT a weight loss procedure. The fat cells are permanently disrupted with a Liposonix treatment. Since fat cells do not weight very much you may not notice a significant loss in weight but rather a loss of circumference inch(es); similarly to traditional liposuction.

Who is the ideal candidate for RejuveFillTM, stem cell enhanced natural breast augmentation?

Anyone who wants to achieve a natural looking, permanent increase in breast size should consider RejuveFill™, stem cell enhanced natural breast augmentation.

How is RejuveFill™ stem cell natural breast augmentation performed?

Natural breast augmentation is generally performed as an outpatient treatment. First, unwanted body fat is first removed from areas such as the abdomen, thighs and buttocks using gentile Body-jet liposuction. Then, stem cells are harvested from one portion of the fat and added to the rest of the extracted body fat before being injected into the breast. The supercharged, concentrated fat graft creates the result with a natural looking, permanent breast augmentation.

Does the natural breast augmentation procedure use general anesthesia?

No, the entire procedure which includes liposuction and the actual breast augmentation are performed under local anesthesia and twilight sleep (intravenous sedation).

How long does the procedure take?

Natural breast augmentation, which includes fat and stem cell harvesting in addition to the procedure preparation time beforehand, takes approximately 4-6 hours to complete.

About 90 percent of the new breast volume is typically retained after the procedure, and patients do not need to return for additional follow-up treatments

How are the stem cells harvested in natural breast augmentation?

The stem cells are extracted with a special stem cell processing system from the patient’s body fat taken out during the liposuction portion of the procedure. The concentrated stem cells are then mixed with another batch of fat before being injected into the breast.

Will the harvested fat survive after the procedure is finished?

Yes, most of the fat injected into the breast will be retained. With the addition of stem cells, the survival rate of the injected fat is about 90 percent.

Can the stem cells also be used to make breasts firmer?

Natural breast augmentation with stem cells is generally best suited for restoring volume in the breast, not firmness. However, breasts augmented with stem cell enriched fat will usually appear fuller and firmer due to the additional volume and rejuvenating effect of the stem cells. If the breast firmness is our main concern, you may consider Vaser assisted RejuveBreast™ a scarless breast lift offered by Dr. Shu.
